ThoughtForm is pleased to announce that Sarah Portman has joined us from the University of Cincinnati as an intern for the Summer of 2021. Recently, we sat down with Sarah to learn a bit about her love of hockey, her career path in design, and her dog, Peanut Butter.
Tell us a little bit about your background.
Currently, I’m a student at the University of Cincinnati in my third year of a five-year Communication Design program. I’m originally from Dayton, Ohio, but I love being in the city of Pittsburgh, and I’m so excited to be working with ThoughtForm. In my free time, you can find me dancing, watching hockey (Go Pens!), or playing with my dog, Peanut Butter.
How have you been adapting to work during the pandemic?
I’ve found it incredibly beneficial to have a designated space for work. For me, that’s the dining room table. I essentially use the dining room as my office while I’m working, which helps me to separate my work from my personal life. I’ve also discovered that taking a quick lunchtime walk with my dog helps increase my focus and creativity when stuck at home.
What advice do you have for someone just getting started down a similar career path to your own?
Always be curious and hungry to learn more. That’s what’s always helped me. I try to explore various design types and styles, and follow designers or design firms on social media. Internships are also a wonderful way to learn a lot quickly and make professional connections.
Who’s currently on your work playlist?
There’s a hefty amount of Classic Rock in my work playlist, but some notable mentions include Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Journey, Guns ’n’ Roses, and Bon Jovi.
